Updated Dec. 20, 2012
Yes, it's been a while since I posted. I was beginning to think that I would take a sabbatical from blogging during the winter months as there is not much going on in the garden to write about. Hurricane Sandy changed that idea. I started putting together "Emergency Evacuation Kits" last summer during the wildfires, but got sidetracked and never finished. Now I am determined to get them finished and I am going to share the process here with my readers.
My plan is to have a bucket (for food), a bag (for clothes, toiletries, etc.) a box (for tent, sleeping bags, etc.) and a list of things to grab that would not already be stored in one of the previous.
I'm starting with the buckets ...
For Bug Out Buckets
Meals for 3 days
Extra snacks
Sterno
Sterno stove
Waterproof matches
Eating kit
Hand sanitizer
I have most of the supplies purchased now and will update this post soon with pics of the final bucket supplies.
Update 12/20/12
If the Mayan Calendar is correct and tomorrow is EOTWAWKI then I'm going to need these supplies so I figured today would be a good day to update this post with the final content list of the buckets.
A Sterno Folding Stove
Can of Sterno
Metal mug with napkin, spork, 2 boxes of waterproof matches, hand sanitizer and a bottle of liquid Benadryl.
Meals for Day 1
Breakfast:
Instant Organic Oatmeal
Orange Juice
Applesauce
Dry Milk (a package to last all 3 days; water is in the backpack)
Lunch:
Package of tuna salad
Mayo packs
Crackers
Pudding cup
Dinner:
Chicken Noodle Soup (this is one of the heaviest items so I put it for day one to lighten the bucket)
Crackers with peanut butter
Applesauce (I like applesauce)
Meals for Day 2
Breakfast:
Granola bars
Apple Juice
Applesauce (I did mention that I like applesauce)
Lunch:
Package of salmon
Mayo packs
Crackers
Orange Juice
Raisins
Dinner:
Mountain House Lasagna with Meat (I went with these because the are lightweight with good amounts of protein and fat and only need hot water to reconstitute. Each of us will have the same in our own bucket in case we get separated but if we are together these are actually set up to feed two so we would in effect have enough food for 5 days.)
Orange Juice
Pudding cup
Meals for Day 3
Breakfast:
Mountain House scrambled eggs with bacon
Orange Juice
Applesauce (yes, more applesauce)
Lunch:
Tuna snack pack
Extra mayo pack and crackers
Peach Cup
Dinner:
Mountain House Chicken and Potatoes
Crackers with peanut butter
Peach Cup
Extra for all 3 days is a bag labeled "Snacks" ; juice, raisins, pudding cup, crackers with peanut butter, granola bars, etc.

It all fits in a 5 gallon bucket and weighs less than 15 pounds. Everything in the buckets except the sporks (Cabelas) was purchased at my local WalMart so it is available nationwide at a reasonable cost.
Next I'll be putting together our Bug Out Bags. This is the list I have put together so far ...
Particle mask
Small flashlight
Medications
Clothes (change seasonally)
Toiletries
Shoes/boots
Toothpaste/toothbrush/floss
Umbrella
Rain gear
Pistol/ammunition
Water
Cash
Do you have an evacuation kit? Can you add any ideas for my lists?
More To Come ...

One thing that I am going to make sure we have ready is some sort of solar charging system. Right now we have a small solar panel that we can can hook up to an automotive or RV battery and then we run a power inverter off the battery to have 110 power available. I know that there are several types of smaller solar chargers that would provide enough for a cell phone or camera. There are also day packs that have a solar panel built in them - very cool. Always good to be ready for whatever. Copies of all important files should be with you, too, such as insurance policies, passports, etc.
ReplyDeleteyou definitely need a small first aid kit, a whistle, all purpose utility tool, plastic, rope and a compass....just sayin
